Weekend Edition: Salesforce Ventures Doubles Down On Europe With A New $125M Fund

VC Deals

Wild Earth, Inc., a startup reinventing pet food with biotech, today announced it has closed its Series A with an investment of $11 million led by VegInvest, a venture capital firm supporting early-stage companies striving to replace the use of animals in the food system and other industries. This is VegInvest's second investment in Wild Earth; other current investors include Mark Cuban's Radical Investments, Felicis Ventures, Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, and Mars Petcare, bringing total funding to $16 million. More

Roughly $165 billion worth of wholesale produce is bought and sold every year in the U.S. And while that number is expected to go up to $1 trillion by 2025, the business of agribusiness remains unaffected by technology advancements that have reshaped almost every other industry. Now Silo, a company that recently raised $3 million from investors led by Garry Tan and Alexis Ohanian’s Initialized Capital and including Semil Shah from Haystack Ventures, angel investors Kevin Mahaffey and Matt Brezina and The Penny Newman Grain Company, an international grain and feed marketplace, is looking to change that. More

Urban Jungle, a digital insurance startup targeting so-called “generation rent” with a range of insurance products, has raised £2.5 million in a seed funding round. The round is said to be backed by a mixture of new and previous investors, including Rob Devey, the former CEO of Prudential UK, and Simon Rogerson, CEO of Octopus Group. Described as challenging traditional insurance providers by catering to U.K. renters who have historically been underserved by the insurance industry, Urban Jungle offers contents insurance, gadget insurance and tenant-liability policies.  More

As we swing into the summer tourist season, a company poised to capitalise on that has raised a huge round of funding. GetYourGuide — a Berlin startup that has built a popular marketplace for people to discover and book sightseeing tours, tickets for attractions and other experiences around the world — is today announcing that it has picked up $484 million, a Series E round of funding that will catapult its valuation above the $1 billion mark.  More

Ride Report, a Portland, OR – based solution for cities to integrate new forms of micromobility, like bikes, scooters, and small electric vehicles, raised $3.4m in seed funding. The round was led by Homebrew, with Urban Innovation and Better Ventures also participating. The company intends to use the funds to strengthen partnerships with mobility operators and expand to serve more cities around the world.  More

Palo Alto, California-based Cardinal Analytx Solutions, which develops and maintains predictive analytics software for health care payers and providers, today announced that it has secured $22 million in a series B round led by Kleiner Perkins chair John Doerr, with participation from strategic investors GuideWell Mutual Holding Corporation, Blue Shield California, and Premera Blue Cross. The capital infusion follows a $6.1 million series A round in 2017 and will enable the company to further invest in talent and technology, according to CEO Linda T. Hand.  More

Interplay Learning, an Austin, Texas-based provider of online training for skilled trades utilizing virtual reality (VR) and 3D simulations, secured $5.5M in Series A financing. The round was led by S3 Ventures, with participation from Shasta Ventures, Sierra Ventures, Holt Ventures, Wild Basin Investments, and Shelter Capital Partners. In conjunction with the funding, Charlie Plauche, Partner with S3 Ventures, will join Interplay Learning’s Board of Directors. The company intends to use the funds to onboard talent in its Austin offices and customer success team, while accelerating expansion into new markets and developing new platform features. More

Acquisitions

Cvent, a meetings, events, and hospitality technology provider, acquired Wedding Spot, a San Francisco, Calif.-based wedding venue sourcing platform. The amount of the deal was not disclosed. The acquisition of Wedding Spot enables Cvent to bring additional group business opportunities to the more than 260,000 hotels and venues that currently utilize its Cvent Supplier Network, further accelerating its product roadmap and global growth in the hospitality sector.  More

New Funds

To Jussi Lystimäki, the VP of Barcelona’s Adevinta Ventures, the challenge with starting a Europe-focused fund is that the region isn’t “harmonic.” “In Europe, you have very local markets, very local ecosystems,” he told Crunchbase News from his Barcelona office. Adevinta Ventures has put money into three marketplace startups, and it has also put money into supporting local seed-stage venture capital firms.  More

The Los Angeles ecosystem is $76 million stronger today as Fika Ventures, a seed-stage venture capital firm, announces its sophomore investment fund. Fika invests roughly half of its capital exclusively in startups headquartered in LA, with a particular fondness for B2B, enterprise and fintech companies. The firm was launched in 2017 by general partners Eva Ho and TX Zhuo, formerly of Susa Ventures and Karlin Ventures, respectively. The pair raised $41 million for the debut effort, opting to nearly double that number the second time around as a means to participate in more follow-on fundings.  More

IPOs

More than a month after reports emerged that Endeavor had begun preparing for an IPO, the marketing and entertainment colossus has filed to go public, with The Hollywood Reporter citing insiders who say the Los Angeles-based company will raise around $500 million at a valuation of at least $6 billion.  More

Exits

One of the bigger developments in customer services has been the impact of social media — both as a place to vent frustration or praise (mostly frustration) and — especially over messaging apps — as a place for businesses to connect with their users. Now, customer support specialist Zendesk has made an acquisition so that it can make a bigger move into how it works within social media platforms, and specifically messaging apps: it has acquired Smooch, a startup that describes itself as an “omnichannel messaging platform,” which companies’ customer care teams can use to interact with people over messaging platforms like WhatsApp, WeChat, Line and Messenger, as well as SMS and email.  More

As 5G networks launch across the world, a word that was previously unknown to consumers — “spectrum” — has become critically important to next-generation wireless devices. Wireless spectrum is invisible, but you can visualize it as a highway divided up into narrow lanes so vehicles can safely travel in parallel between destinations. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the earliest radio signals were free to travel wherever they could, but subsequent wireless devices such as televisions, radars, satellites, and cellular phones required governments to allocate specific wireless frequencies (spectrum) for individual purposes, creating unseen multi-lane data highways in the air.  More

Weekend Edition. Leapfrog Investments Closes new fund at $700M

VC Deals

Nextdoor, a popular social network for neighbors, announced today that it has raised a $123 million Series F led by Riverwood Capital. Founded in 2010, Nextdoor aims to connect people who live in the same, or nearby, neighborhoods together by creating a forum for them to communicate digitally. Its presence has grown over time (I’ve personally used it for years!) and currently, people in over 236,000 neighborhoods are using the platform. More

Impossible Foods, which makes a meatless plant-based burger and is backed by celebrities like Serena Williams and Katy Perry, said on Monday it has raised $300 million in the latest round of funding ahead of a possible initial public offering. More

Locketgo, which offers mobile-charging lockers for event attendees, has announced the close of a $1.2 million round of seed funding.The Montreal-based company said the new funding will enable it to push into the North American market, grow its team, and continue its research and development. This round was led by Anges Québec, and also included members of Real Ventures, CH Group, Maple Leaf Angels, and Jeffrey Kadanoff. More

MedCrypt, a company based in Southern California, has raised a $5.3 million Series A funding round led by Section 32. Participation also came from Eniac Ventures and Y Combinator. The startup was part of Y Combinator’s winter 2019 cohort. Founded in 2016, MedCrypt brings regulatory mandated cybersecurity practices to medical device vendors. Its offering can be used for medical imaging devices, pacemakers and surgical robots, among other devices. More

Trusted Health, a San Francisco, CA-based career platform for modern nurses to work, connect and grow, closed a $20m Series A funding. The round was led by Craft Ventures with participation from previous investors Felicis Ventures and Founder Collective. In conjunction with the funding, Jeff Fluhr, general partner at Craft Ventures and co-founder of StubHub, will also be joining the board. More

 Daye, a “femcare” startup developing a new type of tampon that uses CBD to help tackle dysmenorrhea, has quietly raised $5.5 million in funding from high-profile investors in the U.S. and Europe, TechCrunch has learned. Backing the seed round is Silicon Valley’s Khosla Ventures, along with London’s Index Ventures and Kindred Capital. The investment sees Khosla’s chief of staff Kristina Simmons, Khosla venture partner Tim Westergren (who also founded Pandora), and Hannah Seal, principle at Index, join Daye’s board. More

Cloud kitchens are the big thing in food delivery, with ex-Uber CEO Travis Kalanick’s new business one contender in that space, with Asia, and particularly Southeast Asia, a major focus. Despite the newcomers, a more established startup from Singapore has raised a large bowl of cash to go after regional expansion. More

Spur Energy Partners and global investment firm KKR have formed a partnership to acquire large, high-margin oil and gas production and development assets across the Lower 48. More 

Cambridge, Massachusetts-based ElevateBio announced its launch Monday with $150 million in Series A funding. The round was led by the UBS Oncology Impact Fund, which MPM Capital and F2 Ventures manage, along with EcoR1 Capital, Redmile Group and Samsara BioCapital. The company plans to form partnerships with academic researchers, medical centers and entrepreneurs and then launch new cell and gene therapy companies, including those with single product and with multiple products. ElevateBio will provide founders with scientists, manufacturing facilities and expertise in drug development and commercialization. More

New Funds

 LeapFrog Investments has closed a dedicated impact fund manager, at $700m. Investors include leading insurers, pensions and asset managers, development finance institutions, foundations and family offices. More

 U.S. Venture Partners, a Menlo Park, CA-based venture capital firm, raised $292.6m for its latest fund. According to a regulatory form filed with the SEC, U.S. Venture Partners XII, L.P., has a final target of $350m. 62 backers participated in the offering. Led by General Partners Casey Tansey, Steve Krausz, Jonathan Root and Rick Lewis, U.S. Venture Partners focuses on early-stage start-ups that transform cybersecurity, enterprise software, consumer mobile and e-commerce, and healthcare. Debt Financing

VanillaSoft, a tech-enabled sales engagement service, has received a $3 million loan from the Fonds Régional de Solidarité Outaouais (FRSO). This is in addition to a $1 million loan from Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED), announced last month, bringing the company’s total funds raised over the last month to $4 million. More

HTC has unveiled the HTC Exodus 1s smartphone, a cheaper version of the Exodus 1 phone with built-in cryptocurrency and blockchain.The new phone will be launched at the end of the third quarter. The Exodus 1s combines blockchain with a smartphone to bring the decentralized ledger technology to a new audience. More

Legal

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 against Apple on Monday on a case involving whether or not a group of iPhone users will be allowed to bring an antitrust lawsuit against the company regarding its App Store practices. The iPhone owners allege that Apple’s 30% commission on App Store sales is passed along to users, representing an unlawful and unfair use of Apple’s monopoly power. More 

Ontario Government Funding News

Canada's top innovation Institutions will be facing cutbacks following the Ontario government implements cuts to startup and later-stage businesses, according to the The Globe and Mail. An increasing number of innovation centres have said their funding has been affected. The province will be cutting funding to the Ontario Centres of Excellence by more than half. The OCE helps start-ups and later-stage companies get funding. More

Health coaching app developer Noom announced today that it has raised $58 million led by Sequoia Capital. Other participants include Aglaé Ventures, the tech investment arm of French holding company Groupe Arnault, WhatsApp co-founder and former CEO Jan Koum, DoorDash co-founder and CEO Tony Xu, Oscar Health co-founder Josh Kushner, SB Project co-founder Scooter Braun and returning investor Samsung Ventures. India has a new unicorn after BigBasket, a startup that delivers groceries and perishables across the country, raised $150 million for its fight against rivals Walmart’s Flipkart, Amazon and hyperlocal startups Swiggy and Dunzo. More

Cross-border fintech continues to be an area of interest for venture capitalists. The latest deal sees GGV Capital — the U.S-China firm that’s backed Xiaomi, Airbnb, Square and others — lead a $10 million investment in Singapore-based startup Thunes.Other investors in the Series A round are not being disclosed at this point. More 

Chinese electric-car startup Byton is close to clinching funding from investors led by state-owned China FAW Group Co., as it prepares to begin sales in the country’s burgeoning new-energy vehicle market, according to people familiar with the matter. More

Index Ventures, the venture capital firm backing Asos, Farfetch and Net-a-Porter, has invested 7 million euros (approximately 7.8 million US dollars or 6 million pounds) in Otrium, a Dutch marketplace where brands can sell their unsold stock with discounts of up to 75 percent. In addition, Index partner Danny Rimer is set to join Otrium’s board of directors. More

Industrious has acquired TechSpace, an office-space provider for tech-related companies with locations in California, New York City, Texas and Virginia for an undisclosed amount in a deal that closed yesterday, according to a company release. The acquisition will add seven new locations to the Industrious portfolio. More 

IPOs 

Luckin Coffee, the Chinese challenger to Starbucks, is looking to raise up to $586.5 million, its filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange on Monday showed. The company said it expects to offer 34.5 million American depository shares (ADS) priced between $15 and $17 per ADS in an initial public offering. Each ADS represents eight Class A shares, it said. More 

Uber priced its initial public offering at $45 per share, the company announced Thursday evening. This price is at the low point of the $44 to $50 range previously set by the company in earlier financial documents. The price would give Uber an initial market cap of $75.5 billion, significantly below the $120 billion price valuation that some of the company's bankers reportedly sought at the beginning of the IPO process. More

Philippines-based Kickstart Ventures, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Globe Telecom, was selected by Ayala Corporation (AC) to manage its new US$150m venture capital fund.  More 

Gainline Capital Partners LP, a Stamford, CT-based private equity firm that invests in U.S.-based lower middle-market companies, closed its $155m debut fund.  More 

Acquisitions 

Edgewell Personal Care, the conglomerate that owns Schick razor and other brands, announced on Thursday that it is buying shaving start-up Harry’s, in a $1.37 billion deal. About 79% of the deal is cash and the rest is stock. More 

People 

 Sequoia Capital China, widely viewed as a bellwether for Chinese tech investment, is set to lay off as much as 20 percent of investment staff as a slowdown in the country's tech sector saps appetite for risk, said two people with knowledge of the matter. More 

AI News 

Today, at Google’s annual I/O developer conference in Mountain View, California, Jeff Dean, a senior fellow in Google’s Research Group and the head of Google’s AI division, gave an overview of the company’s efforts to solve challenging scientific problems with AI and machine learning. More

Biolux Research, a Vancouver, Canada-based developer of innovative Light Accelerated Orthodontic products, closed a $14M Series A funding round. The round was led by Venrock and joined by Correlation Ventures, insiders and other investors. Biolux manufactures OrthoPulse®, an FDA cleared orthodontic device currently being sold in the United States, Europe, and Asia. OrthoPulse is a non-invasive technology which, when used ten minutes each day, can accelerate orthodontic treatment. More

Companies are on the hunt for ways to reduce the time and money it costs their employees to perform repetitive tasks, so today a startup that has built a business to capitalize on this is announcing a huge round of funding to double down on the opportunity. UiPath — a robotic process automation startup originally founded in Romania that uses artificial intelligence and sophisticated scripts to build software to run these tasks — today confirmed that it has closed a Series D round of $568 million at a post-money valuation of $7 billion. More

Mejuri, a Toronto, Canada-based direct-to-consumer online jewelry retailer, raised $23m in Series B funding.The round was led by New Enterprise Associates, with participation from Incite Ventures, BDC Capital, Felix Capital, Imaginary Ventures, and Dash Ventures.The company intends to use the funds to continue to expand operations and grow its business reach. More

Roundtrip, a company offering a non-emergency medical transportation solution, has raised a $5.14 Series A round, according to a news release sent to MedCity. Motley Fool Ventures led the round, while Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University participated. More

Zenoti, the leading enterprise cloud platform for the beauty and wellness industry, announced today that it has closed a $50 million Series C funding round led by Tiger Global Management with participation from Norwest Venture Partners and Accel. Already the leading software choice for salon and spa chains, Zenoti has thousands of customers spanning 44 countries. More

New Funds

Union Square Ventures, a venture capital firm known for early bets in Twitter, Etsy and Tumblr, has $450 million in capital commitments to plow into the next generation of technology startups. The capital, which comes in just above the $429 million USV filed to raise earlier this year, is divided across two new funds: $200 million for its 2019 Core Fund and $250 million for the 2019 Opportunity Fund. More

Harrison Street, an alternative real asset investment firm dedicated to the Education, Healthcare and Storage sectors, closed its second European closed-end fund, Harrison Street European Property Partners II, L.P., at €500m. More

Plant-based meat maker Beyond Meat Inc on Tuesday increased the expected price range and size of its initial public offering, ahead of an expected market debut on Thursday, indicating strong investor demand. The company said it expects to offer 9.63 million shares, up from 8.75 million shares and the IPO to be priced between $23 and $25 per share, up from $19 and $21 per share. More

Corporate M & As

Walmart has agreed to buy India's leading online retailer Flipkart, paying $16 billion for a controlling stake of 77%. Flipkart gives Walmart access to a market it has been trying to crack for years. The Arkansas-based retailer has been restricted by local regulations to operating wholesale outlets in the world's fastest growing economy. More

Exits

Curaleaf Holdings Inc., the most valuable U.S. marijuana company, is making a big bet on cannabis oil. The Massachusetts-based company is buying the regulated cannabis business of Cura Partners Inc., a maker of oil for vape pens, in a stock deal valued at about US$950 million. That makes it the largest acquisition so far between U.S. cannabis companies. More

PE Deals

Imperial Dade, a leading distributor of disposable food service and janitorial supplies in the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, today announced the signing of a definitive agreement for Bain Capital Private Equity to acquire a majority stake in the company. Imperial Dade will continue to be led by its current management team, who will remain significant investors in the company. More

Blackford Capital has sold its portfolio company Custom Profile to the employees of the company in partnership with Mosaic Capital Partners through an employee stock ownership plan. The sale of Custom Profile is Blackford’s second exit from its 2012 vintage Michigan Prosperity Fund. More

Weekend Edition. Hitachi to acquire JR Automation Technologies, LLC ("JR") for $1.425B

VC Deals

Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Sherlock Biosciences said Tuesday that it had raised $31 million in a Series A round, led by Northpond Ventures and Baidu Ventures, with additional contributions from the Open Philanthropy Project and other investors. The company was launched last month with $35 million in initial financing, which included a $17.5 million non-dilutive grant and another investment by the Open Philanthropy Project.  More


San Diego-based Poseida Therapeutics said Monday that it had closed a $142 million Series C funding round led by drugmaker Novartis, with Aisling Capital Management, Pentwater Capital Management and Perceptive Advisors participating. Malin Corp., Longitude Capital, Vivo Capital, Boxer Capital and other undisclosed institutional investors also contributed. Novartis markets the CAR-T therapy Kymriah (tisagenlecleucel) for pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.  More


Less than a month after rebranding as Canoo, the startup electric vehicle company formerly known as Evelozcity is on the hunt for $200 million in new capital. The startup, which is backed by a clutch of private individuals and family offices hailing from China, Germany and Taiwan, is hoping to line up the new capital from some more recognizable names as it finalizes supply deals with vendors, according to a person with knowledge of the company’s plans.  More


Selina has raised $100 million in fresh financing, the Tel Aviv-based blended hospitality startup said Wednesday. Access Industries led the Series C round. Grupo Wiese and existing investors Colony Latam Partners also participated. Selina runs a network of 46 properties in a dozen Latin American countries and Portugal. It offers private and shared accommodation with coworking facilities, cafes, wellness, and local experiences.  More


Soma, a Helsinki, Finland-based blockchain-based social marketplace startup, closed a €1.1M bridge funding round. The round included a substantial investment from the Finnish Government as well as private angel investors. The company intends to use the funds to perform market research, acquire users, and iterate on its product.  More

Crestview Partners ("Crestview") and Hitachi, Ltd. ("Hitachi") today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement for Hitachi to acquire JR Automation Technologies, LLC ("JR") for $1.425 billion. JR is a leading provider of intelligent automated manufacturing and distribution technology solutions headquartered in Holland, Michigan.  More

The American Medical Association has launched a new project with Sling Health, a national biotechnology incubator, in an effort to integrate physician perspectives into new technology development as early as possible. The two groups debuted the project, called the Clinical Problem Database, on the AMA's Physician Innovation Network, an online forum that connects physicians with digital health companies seeking clinician feedback.  More


IPOs


DouYu International Holdings Ltd., a Chinese video-game live-streaming platform, filed for an U.S. IPO as it seeks to win market share among the country’s younger generation who love to splurge on virtual gifts for their favorite streamers. The initial filing came almost a year after its biggest competitor, Huya Inc., listed in the U.S. last May. The duo, which operate like Twitch, are China’s top two video-game live-streaming platforms. Both companies are backed by Tencent Holdings Ltd., which plowed more than $1 billion into DouYu and Huya in the past year.  More


Beyond Meat, the meat replacement company whose packages of Beyond Burgers line grocery store aisles across America, has priced its initial public offering. The company is looking to raise roughly $200 million in the stock sale for its portfolio of burger, chicken and sausage replacements, selling 8.75 million shares of common stock at an upper limit of $21 per share that would value Beyond Meat at more than $1 billion.  More


Joint Ventures


Sony last year announced it would enter Japan’s taxi-hailing space and, good to its word, the electronics giant has kicked off its S.Ride service in Tokyo. The service — which was first noted by CNET — is a joint venture between Sony, its payment services subsidiary and five licensed taxi companies. Because ride-hailing with civilian cars is illegal in Japan, the service will focus on connecting licensed taxis with passengers. More


Hostile Takeovers

A bidding war in the petroleum space broke out Wednesday after Occidental Petroleum made a $38 billion offer for Anadarko Petroleum, topping the $33 billion offer Chevron made earlier this month. Shares of Anadarko, the oil and natural gas exploration and production company, soared 12%.  More
