myDigitalOffice, a Bethesda, MD-based hotel information management platform for sourcing, processing and storing hotel data in the cloud, secured $4m in Series A funding. More

Simon Fraser University (SFU) is receiving $17 million from the government of British Columbia over the next five years to establish the Quantum Algorithms Institute, at its campus in Surrey, BC. More

Next Insurance, a Palo Alto, CA-based digital Insurtech company focused on small business insurance, raised $250m in Series C funding. Munich Re provided the funding in a round that brought total funding to $381m in over three years, with a valuation of over $1 billion USD. More

Swift Health Systems, Inc., an Irvine, CA-based maker of invisible orthodontic braces, raised $45M in series C funding. The round, which brought total capital raised by the company to more than $70m, was co-led by Vivo Capital, Novo Holdings and venBio Partners. More

Missing out on a month’s rent because you can’t find a tenant is a huge loss. Doorstead’s approach to the hot sector of “iRenting” has attracted a $3.3 million seed round co-led by M13 and Silicon Valley Data Capital, and joined by Venture Reality Fund and SOMA Capital. More

Osaro, a San Francisco startup developing AI-based solutions for industrial robots, today announced that it’s closed a $16 million series B funding round led by King River Capital (KRC), with participation from Alpha Intelligence Capital, Founders Fund, Pegasus Tech Ventures, GiTV Fund, and existing and strategic investors. More

DeepRoute, a Shenzen, China-based L4 full stack self-driving system provider, raised approx. $50m in funding. DeepRoute is a full-stack solution provider focusing on L4 autonomous driving with a global presence. More

Voyager Capital is ditching California and doubling down on the Pacific Northwest — with a new interest across the border up north. The Seattle-based venture capital firm has closed its fifth fund, raising $100 million that it will use to invest in 15-to-20 early stage B2B startups across Washington, Oregon, and Western Canada. It has already made five new investments as part of the fund.  More

Thin Line Capital, a Pasadena, CA-based venture capital firm, launched a seed-stage fund with a first close of over $5m. The firm believes that, after the downturn in 2009, the industry has entered a “2nd wave” of cleantech investing. More

IPOs

Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) said on Tuesday it was reviewing its involvement in Megvii Technology Ltd’s planned initial public offering after the U.S. government placed the Chinese artificial intelligence firm on a human rights blacklist. More

PayPal Holdings Inc. will report a $228-million loss on investments before taxes in the third quarter, driven in large part by a bad bet on Uber Technologies Inc. just before it went public. More
